A First-Year Experience
DCCC offers a first-year experience that prepares students for college and helps them develop skills necessary to succeed in their chosen area of study. This first-year experience, known on campus as Storm Toward Success, includes three parts:
- Orientation – This required orientation is the initial contact with your child. It includes an extended orientation program that introduces students to the College and their major of choice. It also provides an opportunity to get administrative work taken care of ahead of time so students can focus on academic success.
- Hands-On Advising – Our involved advising program gives each student a point of contact for any academic needs. The advisor helps students realize their goals and how to achieve them. Our Starfish Early Alert System provides faculty with the infrastructure to alert the student and/or advisor of any potential issues of concern or areas of achievement.
- Student Success Course (ACA 090) – All students with an unweighted high school GPA of less than 3.0 are required to take ACA 090, which engages students in eight foundational principles. The course helps students discover their own learning styles and how to succeed using that style. ACA 090 gives students the skills to prioritize their work, be productive and still implement creativity into their field of study.
