Free College Planning and Preparation for Students of Thomasville and Lexington City Schools

The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded Davidson County Community College with a grant to implement its national initiative called Talent Search. The program seeks to identify and assist first generation students with the potential for achieving success in college but who may face barriers to obtaining higher education.

The program is free and open to all first generation students in grades six through twelve in Thomasville and Lexington City schools. First generation students needing reentry to secondary or post-secondary schools are also eligible. Talent Search is sponsored by DCCC but has a goal to assist students in preparation for entry into any college or university of their choice. Applications will be accepted starting March 1 and are available at DavidsonCCC.edu/talentsearch.

"We are thrilled to be awarded the Talent Search grant, which will provide high quality college planning and preparation assistance to more than 500 students," says Kevin Lineberry, Dean of Enrollment Services at DCCC. "Students selected to participate will work closely with Student Success Advisors who will connect them with resources and individualized support to foster success both in high school as well as enrollment into a college or university following high school graduation."

Students participating in the Talent Search program will receive access to one-on-one advising, mentoring, tutoring, life development skills, career exploration, college preparation, financial counseling, and more. The program also provides workshops for families to help parents who may not have a full understanding of what their child needs in order to prepare for college or navigate the college admissions process.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for DCCC and Thomasville and Lexington City school students, parents, and the community," says Paula Langston-Ware, Director of Talent Search at DCCC. "We believe the Talent Search program has the ability to transform lives and set participants on a path of successful post-secondary attainment."
Space is limited and students and their families are encouraged to apply soon. Enrollment will be given to eligible students on a first come, first serve basis. In addition to helping students learn the technical aspects of how to prepare for college and what to expect, Talent Search is designed to inspire and build confidence in each participant.
