DCCC to Host Women’s History Month Events

Feb. 27, 2013 – Davidson County Community College will host a variety of events to celebrate Women’s History Month in March, which highlights the contributions of women in events throughout history. The events include a documentary, a well-known play, and an influential speaker.

Events in March include:

· “MissRepresentation,” which airs from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. on March 11 in Reich Auditorium on the Davidson Campus. The documentary, by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, explores the media’s misrepresentation of women.

· “The Vagina Monologues,” by Eve Ensler, at 11 a.m. on March 28 and April 4, 7 p.m. on April 5 and 3 p.m. on April 6, all in Gee Auditorium on the Davidson Campus. The play celebrates female sexuality in all its complexity and mystery. The performance includes excerpts produced by students in an American Women’s Studies course.

· “Don’t Call Me a B: Empowerment for Women’s History Month,” presented by Traciana Graves, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on March 19 in Gee Auditorium on the Davidson Campus and 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on the Davie Campus. Graves discusses stories of visionaries such as Adrianne Rich, Rosa Parks, Mother Theresa and others, and the audience members explore the challenges, achievements and legacies each person has contributed through their unique and essential voice.

“The purpose of celebrating Women’s History Month is to remember the extraordinary accomplishments of notable and ordinary women,” says Lynne Watts, director of Student Life and Leadership at DCCC. “These events provide inspiration to both women and men to move past any struggles or hardships, and achieve their dreams.”
