As our Spring 2020 semester wraps up and many students look forward to graduation on Friday night, I wanted to take the opportunity to share a few things with those of you who are currently enrolled or who are planning to take classes this summer and/or fall. After reading these updates, make sure you complete the survey at the end of the email for a chance to win a free Amazon gift card!
This spring semester has shown us just how resilient and committed you are. The transition to online learning and the many challenges you have faced are a testament to your strength. As your president, I’ve never been prouder of our DCCC students.
Over the coming weeks, some classes from this spring will be returning to campus to complete needed hands-on requirements in areas such as health care, advanced manufacturing, and automotive. These students will hear directly from their instructors about these plans.
Most Summer 2020 classes begin June 1, and most of these classes will be online due to our ongoing health and safety efforts related to COVID-19 (coronavirus). Because NC Governor Roy Cooper has developed a phased reopening to slow the spread of coronavirus across our state, and because we are still in the early phases of the plan, we do not feel we can fully reopen campus yet. Students who are enrolled in summer classes will hear directly from their instructors about class plans via your DCCC email, or can log into StormTrac for further details.
Books from the DCCC Bookstore may be purchased online only starting May 23. Purchases may be charged to your financial aid account May 23-June 5.
It is our hope that most Fall 2020 classes can resume in-person instruction; although, as we are all learning, we must implement new precautions to prevent resurgences of coronavirus:
Our custodial and maintenance staff members continue to be on the front lines as they work to keep campus as clean as possible. New cleaning routines are being established and will continue throughout summer and into the fall.
You will see some new physical reminders of our health and safety efforts when you return to campus, including glass barriers in some high-traffic areas and signs that remind you to keep your distance from others.
All employees will be engaged in regular cleaning of their work spaces and will be monitored for illness.
We will take direction from health authorities about when to require the use of face masks by both employees and students. We know many of you have your own masks, and we encourage you to use them consistently in the coming weeks and months to protect yourselves and others.
As always, we will continue to remind everyone who comes onto campus to wash hands or sanitize regularly, and to stay home when sick.
Finally, I hope you will take just a few minutes to complete a survey being conducted across the state to learn more about your educational experiences. A drawing will be held for two students to each receive a $25 Amazon gift card. You can complete the survey by May 15 at this link.
Students, I look forward to the day when we can all see each other on campus again! But in the meantime, know that your DCCC family is here cheering for you, and available to help you with your online learning and other needs. Let’s Storm forward!
