  • Students are encouraged to apply even after priority deadlines, but must pay enrollment expenses to begin classes. They may become eligible at a later date as DCCC processes financial aid applications and makes awards throughout the year.

4. Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress for academic eligibility which requires that students:

  • Maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher
  • Successfully complete 67% (2/3rds) of the cumulative hours attempted
  • Complete the program within 150% of its required number of credit hours
  • Attempt no more than 30 hours of pre-curricular (developmental) course work

5. Students may not receive financial aid at another college during the same time period.

6. Students may not exceed the six year Pell lifetime use limit nor have completed a bachelor's degree to have Pell eligibility. North Carolina's State Grant funds also have time use limits.

Financial Aid Awards:

1. Students are notified by DCCC e-mail of financial aid Award Letters posted on StormTrac

  • View estimated Financial Aid Award Letter and the link for ‘“Financial Aid by Year” to see which types of financial aid have been “A”ccepted (“A”) or “O”ffered (“O”), the terms are funded, and the maximum estimated amounts.
  • Awards are ESTIMATES based on full-time enrollment. Actual disbursement amounts depend upon the enrollment level at time of disbursement charges and remaining eligibility.
  • Student Loans are an “Offered” resource that requires careful consideration and budgeting since students must repay this money with interest.
    • To accept loans, students must complete the required Direct Student Loan Acceptance steps for 2015-16 borrowers.
    • Loans have acceptance and process deadlines, enrollment requirements and loan funds will be disbursed over 4 equal payments in Fall and Spring terms.  Fall - 2 payments & Spring - 2 payments.

The following enrollment levels determine funding levels for financial aid for any funded terms.

12 (or more) credit hours

3/4 Time

9-11 credit hours

1/2 Time*

6-8 credit hours

Less than half time (LTHT)

1-5 credit hours

*Most awards require at least ½-time enrollment

  • Cosmetology, Esthetics, BLET and 1st year Therapeutic Massage are clock-hour payment programs therefore award amounts to students in these programs are prorated and timed differently than other program students.
  • Audits “AU”, Credit by Exam "CE", Transfer Credits, No Shows “NS”, Dropped “D” classes, Deleted classes “X”, or 2nd repeats of previously passed classes are not included in enrollment hours for financial aid purposes.

2. Standard financial aid awards are made for Fall and Spring terms. Summer term is not funded*.

  • Students should SAVE prior term refunds to cover summer enrollment expenses.
  • *Students who do not use 100% of the annual Pell award for fall and spring terms, may receive a summer Pell award. Students should notify Enrollment Services of summer plans so awards may be adjusted.
  • NC Grants such as the Community College Grant (NCCCG) and NC Education Lottery Scholarship (NCELS) require qualified NC Residents be enrolled ½-time fall and spring.  There is no summer state grant aid available.

Registering and Charging Tuition and Books:

1. Students work with Academic Advisors to plan for program enrollment. New students attend orientation and all students register for planned and required classes for the next term.
2. Schedules for eligible awarded students will be held to prevent drops for non-payment.
3. Students eligible for awards during the dates below may charge books and supplies with a photo ID.  Online ordering with scheduled pick-up is also encouraged to save wait time. Returns for credit for FA students may only be done within these charging dates for each term.

Disbursement (Payment) Of Remaining Financial Aid Funds

1. Financial Aid disbursements are made AFTER attendance is confirmed in registered hours.  Since students may enroll in later start-date classes it can affect the amount and timing of financial aid funds.  Course entry is reviewed monthly for changes and financial aid calculated and disbursed the following month.

2.  When financial aid funds are requested a student’s tuition, fees and bookstore charges are paid for first out of the funds.

  • If total costs exceed the amount of currently available aid, the student is responsible for the remaining balance. However, if the student has additional aid pending for future classes yet to start the school will continue to hold the balance for the student until enrollment is confirmed and remaining disbursement(s) made.

3. After charges are paid in full, remaining funds are transmitted to a Discover Debit Card.  Students receive one card from DCCC and Acceluraid Card Services the first term and will use it every term thereafter.

  • First time aid recipients will be mailed the card approximately 7-10 days prior to the disbursement of funds.
  • Cards must be activated and kept secure as with any bank or credit card.  They can be used anywhere Discover Card is accepted. A fee-free ATM is available in the Brooks Student Center lobby.  Students may manage the account at Acceluraid Card Services.

Financial Aid Disbursement Dates

Disbursements are made based on class start dates, attendance, how credits impact enrollment level, and type of financial aid. Enrollment level (¼, ½, ¾ or full-time) is reviewed at the end of each month and any changes to aid processed the following month.

Accepted loan amounts are spread into 4 equal payments over a 2 term academic year.   Loans are planned for 2 disbursement dates in Fall and 2 in Spring.  Dates are ESTIMATES and actual disbursement is dependent upon sufficient enrollment and when loan acceptance steps were completed.

Policy for Student Return of Unearned Financial Aid Funds:

1. Students must attend/participate in classes to earn financial aid funds.

2. Students who officially withdraw from a term or are unofficially withdrawn by faculty due to excessive absences/non-participation will be reviewed for possible return of unearned financial aid funds.

3. The College calculates the portion of aid that was earned and if results determine the student did not attend past the 60% date of the enrollment period, the unearned portion must be returned.

4. Students are notified by DCCC e-mail of the required return and can view billing information on StormTrac.  Payment must be made within 45 days of notification.

5. Failure to repay unearned financial aid or to resolve resulting debts to the DCCC prevents further financial aid, reenrollment at DCCC, the ability to receive transcripts and possible transfer of billing to a collections agency.
