Faculty Cafe Blog
The Faculty Café is a blog that can be accessed through the Office of Learning Design’s weekly newsletter. The Café exists to create community among faculty by introducing new faculty through biographical sketches and highlighting faculty achievements like publications, new degrees, and creative pedagogy in practice. It is published in the Office of Learning Design Newsletter at least bi-weekly and often weekly. New Faculty Orientation
New Faculty Orientation will be held virtually this year on August 11 and 12. The three purposes of our Orientation are as follows:
- To ensure that faculty have the information they need to successfully navigate their first semester at DCCC.
- To introduce faculty to DCCC’s unique culture and to assist them in integrating the College’s Mission, Vision, Vales, and Guiding Teaching Principles into their courses and daily experiences as a faculty member.
- To build community among faculty members not only amongst each other, but with other members of DCCC, particularly with those they will have contact with throughout the semester.
This year all new faculty—both full-time and part-time– will meet together synchronously through Zoom from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM both Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Faculty will have reading and other assignments they will complete during the day in preparation for the evening sessions. NC-NET Academy courses are facilitator-led online courses delivered via Moodle. Enrollment is open to part-time or full-time community college faculty members in North Carolina. Participants should plan to spend 5-7 hours per week on course assignments. Course completers receive a certificate identifying number of contact hours attained and a $100 stipend. From Good Teaching to Student Learning: An Adjunct Faculty Primer
Offered: September 4 – October 9, 2020 OR October 9 – November 13, 2020
Adjunct and new instructors are encouraged to enroll in this course that challenges participants to investigate complex issues: How well does your teaching style mesh with your college’s mission? What’s different about adult learners? How do we reach them—and how do we know that we did? Designed for participants with minimal background in education theory and application, this course will enhance new and adjunct instructors’ understanding of community college students and the factors critical to their academic success. Note: Participants must be currently teaching at least one face-to-face class to complete the activities in this Academy course.
