Occupational Network ABE Class

The Occupational Network program consists of seven major curriculum areas that include:

  • Language
  • Community Living
  • Math
  • Consumer Education
  • Health
  • Vocational Education
  • Social Science

The Occupational Network class offers FREE classes to adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities who have the ability to benefit from an academic setting.

What is the main focus of the Occupational Network class?
The main focus of the Occupational Network class is to help the individual become as independent and self-directed as possible through acquiring basic and life skills needed to function successfully in daily living.

Is there a charge for Occupational Network classes? 
No, the classes and materials are provided free of charge by the College and Career Readiness Program.

Special Admission Requirements

Contact the program director to get information on class locations.  Based on your knowledge, skills, and abilities, an individualized plan will be designed for you.

Occupational Network Class:

  • Classroom instruction could include:
    • Functional reading and writing literacy skills for personal, social, and economic purposes.
    • Mathematic skills for budgeting, home management, and employment.
    • Utilizing computer technology to improve academic skills and work literacy skills.
    • Improving skills in self-determination, self-advocacy, problem solving, citizenship, and planning for the future.
  • Instructional period for students in the occupational network class is up to one year for full-time students (students who attend class 30 hours per week) and up to two years for part-time students (students who attend class less than 30 hours per week).
  • Students in the occupational network class who are unable to successfully complete their goals within the time allowed will be invited to return to the occupational network class. They will be informed of the other available services, such as the community rehabilitation facilities, vocational rehabilitation, Human Resource Development (HRD), and, where available, community supported employment programs.
  • Once a student exits the occupational network class, re-entry is dependent upon the outcome of an individual assessment meeting. The meeting will include the student, the Program Director, and other appropriate College and Career Readiness staff. The meeting will be used to assess the student’s skills and explore the available opportunities.
