What is Service Learning?

Service-learning combines community service with academic instruction, focusing on critical reflective, and personal and civic responsibility.

It involves students in activities that address community-identified needs, while developing their academic skills and commitment to their community.

Examples of Service Learning Activities:
  • Math students tutor third-graders in arithmetic.
  • English students assist in an adult literacy program.
  • Sociology students educate their peers on HIV/AIDS prevention.
  • Nursing students provide home health care to the elderly or disabled.
  • Chemistry students educate elementary school students on proper disposal of household hazardous waste.
  • Law Enforcement students teach community members how to set up a neighborhood watch program.
  • Accounting students help senior citizens with tax returns.
