Library Policies: Children in the Library
Davidson County Community College Libraries are academic libraries with a primary focus on serving the educational needs of adults. Therefore, many books, magazines, videos, and other multimedia are not appropriate for children. The computers in the DCCC library computer lab have unfiltered access to the Internet.
In the best interest and safety of children using the DCCC Libraries, the following guidelines have been established:
Children Through Age 14 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult (18 or older) at all times with the exception of Early College students.
High School Age Young Adults (Ages 15-17) may use the library without a parent or responsible adult present. They may use the computers for word processing and/or research related to school assignments. They are expected to follow the DCCC Guidelines for Using Computing Resources and the DCCC College Code of Conduct, which can be found in the DCCC catalog.
Since the DCCC Libraries are focused on serving the needs of DCCC students, faculty, and staff, an adult who brings a child to the either library is responsible for:
- Appropriate behavior of the child so he/she will not disturb other library patrons
- Keeping the child with him/her at all times
- The child’s proper use of the computers and other library resources
- Monitoring and limiting printing from computers by the child
Monitoring sites the child accesses on the Internet
- Monitoring books, magazines, videos, and multimedia the child uses in the library
