Peru Trip 2012

Service Learning Trip to Peru
May 2012 (Tentative dates: May 15-25)

DCCC is offering this study abroad opportunity through CCID (Community Colleges for International Development, Inc.) in cooperation with Los Amigos, a non-profit organization based in Chimbote, Peru (http://www.losamigos-chimbote.org/). On the program you will meet students from other partner community colleges. You will also have an opportunity to interact with local residents through the volunteer work in which you will be participating.

The Experience in a Nutshell

  • Spend 11 days in Peru
  • Earn college credits
  • Learn about social, economic and other aspects of life in Chimbote and its impoverished neighborhoods
  • Appreciate learning about local culture and customs through interactions with local residents
  • Have a hands on learning experience through volunteering at the local shelters, clinics, agencies

The Program and the Course
The group will spend most time in Chimbote, volunteering at local shelters, clinics and assistance agencies. There is a one day tour into an Inca cultural site outside of Chimbote. The group also spends time in the capital city of Peru, Lima. The program works predominantly with the poorest residents in Chimbote and offers opportunity to learn about efforts of how those populations are being assisted by various programs.

Estimated Program Fee: $1,700

Scholarships: Five $300 scholarships are available

The Program Fee includes: Round trip airfare to Peru, health insurance, accommodation at the Mission, meals (three daily), airport transportation and in-country transfers, cultural activities as noted, fees for scheduled cultural visits.

The Program Fee does not include:
Cost of college tuition, passport (if applicable), airport exit fees, medical deductible, pocket expenses/ incidentals, gratuities, and immunization fees (if applicable). Program fees are subject to change until program costs are finalized and the airline tickets are purchased.

You may also apply for the trip at this site.  THE FIRST FIVE STUDENTS WHO COMPLETE THE APPLICATION PROCESS AND SUBMIT A $200 DEPOSIT TO THE BUSINESS OFFICE WILL RESERVE ONE OF THE FIVE SPOTS AND RECEIVE ONE OF THE $300 SCHOLARSHIPS.
