You can transfer whenever a college accepts you. This timing will vary depending on the program you wish to enter, the school of your choice, the courses you have selected, and the grades you have earned at DCCC. You essentially have four transfer programs from which you may choose:
- After earning the 64-hour associate degree. This choice is your best option in that you are saving money while completing the degree here, you are more likely to qualify for financial aid at the university, and you are usually accepted with junior standing. Upon completion of a 64-hour transfer program, you are guaranteed admission to an UNC-system university!
- After completing the 44-hour general education core. The general education core is your second best choice, and the College is being asked to note this completion on transcripts so universities will facilitate your application. This core of 44 hours, defined by the North Carolina Community College System in collaboration with the University of North Carolina System, is designed to provide courses that will give you a broad exposure to the world’s human experience and knowledge. These 44 hours include English, history, foreign language, science, mathematics, humanities, and social science. If you complete the 44-hour core within the NC Community College System, then that body of courses will transfer as a package to any university in the UNC system and to many private colleges (assuming that you have been accepted at the college). If any of those courses are taken outside of the North Carolina system, then the courses will transfer course by course. Transferring prior to completing the degree or the core means that each course will be transferred individually.
- After completing the minimum admissions requirement, or MAR, (sometimes called the “5 sixes”). The option assures you have completed the MINIMUM requirements universities expect from entering students. The MAR means you have completed six hours of college English, six hours of foreign language, six hours of social sciences, six hours of math, and six hours of science.
- After completing 30 hours of college level work. Typically, universities will waive any freshman requirements (such as SAT or ACT assessment scores) when students transfer with at least 30 hours of college level work. By completing 30 semester hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better (on a four point score), students will typically be admitted as college sophomores.
