Students enrolled in a transfer program at DCCC are guided through a comprehensive process leading to transfer. The advising process is to ensure accuracy and the successful transfer of courses from DCCC to the college or university of the student’s choice.
1. Each student is assigned an Arts & Sciences advisor. At the initial
meeting, the faculty advisor discusses the student's plan for
transferring and shows the student the appropriate pages in the
current College Transfer Handbook for review and planning. Pick up
your copy of the College Transfer Handbook from Admissions, Gee
Building room 133 or the Advisement Center.
The student is guided in the selection of the present term and pre-
plans for the following term.
2. At the next advisement meeting, the advisor asks the student about
plans to transfer and discusses with the student the three preferred
options:
- 64 hours AA/AS/AGE/AFA degree
- 44 hours of general education
- 30 hours of minimum admissions requirements (MAR)
Advisors caution students about transferring with LESS than 24 hours
since students may still be held responsible for freshmen
requirements (SAT scores, application essay, university track
completion, etc).
The student is guided in the selection of the present term and pre-
plans for the following term.
3. At the advisement session prior to the first summer session
(assuming fall entry), students are asked about their progress-both
about their academic progress and the progression of their planning
on transfer. Students are shown what is needed to complete the
degree within the following year (see suggested course sequence for
all of the degrees). The advisor and student consider whether this
plan is realistic. Is there a possibility of using a second summer term
to manage loads and assure degree/goal completion?
The student is guided in the selection of the present term and pre-
plans for the following term.
4. At the fall advisement meeting of the second year-assuming the
student is on track and plans to transfer in the following fall-the
advisor plans for fall, spring, and summer (as needed). Hours and
course distribution are discussed. The a dvisor completes the College
Transfer Referral Form and gives a copy to the student and forwards a
copy to the Director, Advisement and Transfer.
The student is guided in the selection of the present term and pre-
plans for the following term. Also the advisor signs and attaches the
student's application for graduation to the pre-planning form for
“second spring term” (see planning assumptions above).
Students are reminded about the purposes of referral to the Advisement Center where staff:
- Help with application process, financial aid, and scholarship information
- Provide information and opportunities to visit senior colleges
and universities
- Mentor students-along with the faculty advisor-through the process
of application
