Davidson County Community College began its Truck Driver Training Program in August 2001 after several years of operation in cooperation with the North Carolina Truck Driver School at Johnston Community College in Smithfield. Our program is approved by the North Carolina Community College System and is essentially the same eight-week, 384-hour program offered by the North Carolina Truck Driver Training School.
Our lead instructor has over 30 years' experience with over 10 years as an instructor with a major trucking company. Our road instructors each have from nine to more than 30 years over-the-road experience with such companies as Conway-Southern Express, D.M. Bowman, Jevic, Schneider and Yellow Freight, and two are former instructors at the North Carolina Truck Driver Training School.

- Financial Aid: The Truck Driver Training program is approved for veteran’s educational benefits, but not the FAFSA (Pell Grant). Questions should be directed to the DCCC Financial Aid Office at (336) 249-8186, ext. 6227. Targeted Assistance funds are available to assist with tuition and books on a very limited basis.
- Refund Policy: Only tuition and fees will be refunded, if an applicant is unable to meet admission requirements prior to the start of class.
- Special Accommodations: In order to receive Learning Accommodations at DCCC you must notify the Office of Counseling and Disability Services that you have a disability or medical condition and are requesting accommodations. Please contact us in one of the following ways:
- In person: Brooks Student Center, Offices 207 or 213
- By phone: 336‐249‐8186, ext.6342
- By fax: 336‐249‐0379
- Due to the nature of work in the truck driving industry, there are certain physical requirements which are necessary in order to successfully obtain a class A commercial driver’s license and work in the industry. There will be a physical skills test on the second day of class that will determine if the student can do the following: enter and exit the cab safely, enter and exit the trailer safely, press in the clutch, go under the trailer and check their coupling, and go behind the cab and check their connections. Anyone not able to meet these physical requirements will be dismissed from the program at this point.
- While DCCC has an open admissions policy, many employers require criminal background checks and will not hire convicted felons. Presence of a felony on your record will severely limit your employment opportunities in this field. Also, the presence of a DUI or certain traffic violations may present challenges to finding employment in this field.
- If you have any questions about any of these items, please call Clyde Waugh at 336-249-8186, ext. 6288.
