Frequently Asked Questions
What teaching fields are best for lateral entry?
The process of obtaining permanent teaching licensure through lateral entry is designed for persons who completed a Bachelor’s degree without completing the required education requirements for licensure. Lateral entry teachers are usually hired to teach at the middle or high school levels in specific content areas such as history, English, Spanish, or mathematics.

How do I know if there is a need for my content area?
A teaching shortage has existed in North Carolina for some time, and it is predicted to grow as the population changes in coming years. While a need for a specific area can exist, there is a greater shortage in some fields such as science and math. It is recommended that persons interested in lateral entry explore the openings in various school systems and/or talk with the Human Resources department of the system(s) in which employment may be desired.

What if I am not sure I really want to teach? Can I take some courses to explore what it might be like?
Yes. Some people prefer to take one or more courses to see if teaching seems like a good fit. These students can be enrolled as special students. It is recommended that persons interested in this possibility contact the Lateral Entry advisor to explore what course(s) might be appropriate.

Does the College award the permanent teaching license when the courses are completed?
No. The role of the College is to help Lateral Entry teachers complete coursework that addresses the competencies required for permanent licensure. The required competencies are determined by the Regional Alternative Licensing Centers (RALC) of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. In addition, three competencies have to be completed through coursework at a senior institution. When all coursework is completed, the teacher must also pass a standardized assessment, Praxis II, before permanent licensure is obtained. The licensure process is completed by the RALC upon verification of completion of the requirements.
