Mission Statement
The Esthetics Technology program is designed to give students a basic knowledge of the field and practice of Esthetics, as well as an introduction to advanced Esthetic skills. Data collection, interpersonal communication with clients, critical thinking skills, and development of a plan of action for each client is encouraged as the student moves from the 100-hour introduction to basic skills into the advanced clinic environment. The use of online components to reinforce theoretical learning is incorporated into the curriculum. At the completion of the Esthetics Technology program students meeting the NC State Board of Cosmetic Arts requirement standards may apply to take the Esthetician Examination for licensure.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the program take to complete?
Esthetics courses are offered during the day and in the evening. The day program meets Monday through Friday from approximately 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The evening program meets Monday through Thursday evenings, 5:00 – 9:50 p.m. Both the day and evening program take two semesters to complete. The State Board of Cosmetic Arts requires 600 hours in Esthetics training.
The Daytime Esthetics program accepts new students every Fall. The Evening Esthetics program accepts new students every odd calendar year in the Fall.
What is the approximate cost for the full Esthetics course?
Tuition costs for community college programs are set by the N. C. legislature. The cost of books, supplies and uniforms is determined by the specific courses the student takes. While the cost of tuition, books, and supplies is subject to change, for 2008-2009 the total cost (tuition, books, supplies, and uniforms) for the Esthetics program was approximately $1434.
Is there a danger of market saturation regarding job availability?
No, due to the increasing number of full service salons, day spas, and medi-spas open in the triad.
I understand to perform Microdermabrasion treatments you must be certified. How do I get this certification?
Our program teaches Microdermabrasion. We award you a certificate that can be copied and sent to the NC State Board of Cosmetic Arts office in Raleigh once you have completed all course requirements.
What type of skills can I expect to learn?
Esthetics students work during clinical to provide a wide variety of services to clients, many of whom have become regular customers over the years. Among the many skilled services student learn to provide are the following: basic facial skills, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, advanced facials, body waxing, and other body treatments such as mud wraps and sunless tanning.
Success Story
Young Entrepreneur Puts Her DCCC Education to Good Use
One of Davidson County Community College’s youngest student success stories is that of Brooke Howell, an 18-year-old Mocksville resident who graduated with honors from DCCC’s Esthetics Program in May 2004, two weeks before she graduated with honors from Davie County High School.
How can someone graduate from college before graduating from high school? By starting early, Howell explains, and remaining on task. The young entrepreneur opened “Angels Above Day Spa and Tanning” in Mocksville in September 2004 as soon as she passed her state board examinations required of every licensed esthetician. Her business is located at 755 Yadkinville Road is thriving, she said.
