Special Admission Requirements
Applicants for admission to the Healthcare Interpreter program must have:

  • Graduated from an accredited high school or have an Adult High School Diploma or have passed the GED with an equivalency certificate which meets the minimum requirements set by the State of North Carolina
  • Acceptable scores on the College’s placement assessment
  • Acceptable scores on language placement assessment
  • Basic computer skills
  • A criminal background check and/or drug testing is required prior to participation in the clinical component

What do Healthcare Interpreters do?
Healthcare interpreters work in a variety of settings including hospitals, medical centers, substance abuse clinics, crisis intervention clinics, and maternal/child settings; some healthcare interpreters are self-employed. Interpreters perform a variety of interpretation, translation and medical escort services to assist non-English speaking patients who receive care at medical and health agencies.

What is the career outlook for Healthcare Interpreters?
Jobs for healthcare interpreters are expected to grow by 22 percent over the next decade, and interpreters make an above average wage. Healthcare interpreters are in great demand according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and salaries are lucrative with hourly wages ranging from $25 to $50, depending on location.
