The Cancer Information Management program provides quality learning opportunities to prepare individuals for successful employment as Cancer Tumor Registrars.

Special Admission Requirements
Applicants for admission to the Cancer Information program must have:
  • Graduated from an accredited high school or have an Adult High School Diploma or have passed the GED with an equivalency certificate which meets the minimum requirements set by the State of North Carolina
  • Acceptable scores on the College’s placement assessment
  • Basic computer skills
  • A criminal background check and/or drug testing may be required by the clinical site prior to participation in the clinical component

What does a Cancer Registrar do?
A Cancer Registrar reviews the medical records to collect and organize information, such as the types of cancer, locations within the body, and the kinds of treatment that patients receive. This information is provided to health care agencies, researchers, and planners and used for the prevention, treatment and control of cancer.

What type of courses would I have to take?
About half of the courses are basic medical courses, such as medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology. The other half of the courses are related directly to cancer registry work.

How long will it take me to complete the program?
Two years are required for the student without any transfer credit.

Where would the courses be located?
All of the Cancer Information Management courses are on-line. Most of the other required courses are offered in the evening, or on-line or as a hybrid which means online with some classroom.

What is the salary of a Cancer Registrar?
Starting salary is about $30,000.
