Frequently Asked Questions
What licenses are required to work in HVAC?
As an employee, the only required license would be the CFC Refrigerant certification which students will earn if they complete any certificate or our diploma program. The owner of an HVAC company must be licensed by the State Board of Heating Contractors and all employees work under that person's license. If after field experience an employee decides they would like to own their own company or be able to do work on their own (contract for installations, change outs, etc.) the employee must show a minimum of 4,000 hours of hands-on experience to be approved by the State Board of Examiners through an application for the state exam. However, persons with a one-year diploma could have up to half of the required experience (2,000) met, needing only 2,000 hours of field experience to qualify for the state exam. All experience and educational hours are verified and evaluated by the NC State Board of Examiners.
