Due to an initiative set forth by the faculty and staff at Davidson County Community College and the College Transfer Program Association, the North Carolina general statute governing the awarding of degrees was changed to allow students to earn a “44 hour core” diploma.
Simply: a four year degree offered by most all colleges and universities consists of a general education “core” that typically reflects the following modes of inquiry:
- Exposure to written communication
- Exploration of the methods of inquiry in the social/behavioral sciences
- Exploration of the methods of inquiry in the humanities and performing arts
- Exploration of the methods of inquiry in mathematics
- Exploration of the methods of inquiry in the life and physical sciences
With this undergraduate “core” in mind, the faculty and staff within the School of Arts, Sciences, and Education offer a 46 hours “diploma” that parallels the core at any of the 16 University of North Carolina System schools AND, upon earning the diploma, those graduates of NC community colleges are guaranteed admission to a NC university.
