The faculty in the School of the Arts, Sciences, and Education are committed to the principle set forth in the National Science Foundation (NSF) report, “Shaping the Future: New Expectations for Undergraduate Education in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology” (1997).

The faculty from the School of Arts, Sciences, and Education use the following statement from NSF to inform their design of the curriculum to the identification of students’ outcomes:

All students [should] have access to supportive, excellent undergraduate education in science, math, engineering, and technology and all students learn these subjects by direct experience with methods and processes of inquiry. (ii)

With this vision in place, here is short list of initiatives that the faculty have begun for the 2009-2010 academic year:

  • Submitted a National Science Foundation grant proposal to assist with the development and implementation of the aquarium half of the Zoo & Aquarium Technology program.
  • Implemented in Fall 2009 a “2+2” agreement with Guilford College in Forensic Biology.
  • Implemented in Fall 2009 a “2+2” agreement for graduates of the Zoo and Aquarium Science degree to transfer those credits to UNC-Greensboro’s BA in biology.
  • Implemented a curriculum change in the Associate’s in Arts degree so degree candidates must select on life science AND a physical science.  This change broadens the methods of inquiry for the School’s humanities and social sciences transfers.
