Purpose
To challenge and stimulate students in their intellectual, creative and cultural growth. Its aim is to stimulate and encourage the intellectual development of its members and the college as a whole.
Special Admission Requirements
The Scholars program is open to any student enrolled in college-level academic, technical, or vocational credit classes who have completed any preparatory requirements. Students who want to participate in the Scholars program must qualify by meeting any ONE of the following:
- Completion of 12 hours of non-remedial coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better from an accredited institution of higher learning per transfer guidelines.
- SAT scores of 1000 or better (500+ on each section).
- Asset scores indicating either no preparatory Math needs or 51+ on Written Skills.
All interested students must submit a program application accompanied by one (1) letter of recommendation.
A student may remain in the Honors program only if a grade of an A or B is achieved in all honors course work, as well as maintaining the cumulative entry level GPA required for Honors program admission. Receiving a C in an Honors course will result in 1 semester of probationary status in the Honors program. Receiving a second C in an Honors course will result in dismissal from the program. Once dismissed from the program, readmittance will be granted on a case by case basis.
Honors Coursework
In order to receive Honors credit for a specific course, each student must conference with their instructor and outline an Honors project. The student will then complete an Honors Contract for that course which describes the implementation of the project and lists deadlines for each phase. Successful completion of both the course and the project will result in an (H) designation next to the course on transcripts.
Program Completion
Students enrolled in the Scholars program must complete at least 15 hours of Honors course work in order to complete the Scholars program and receive special recognition at Graduation and on their diploma. In addition to coursework, Scholars will participate in ‘Shared Experiences’ throughout the academic year. These experiences will include Guest Speakers, Common Readings and Interdisciplinary Forums. Each year will focus on a different theme, to be determined by the faculty advisory panel.
Degrees, Diplomas, and Certifications Offered
Students may be awarded DCCC Scholar certification on any of the degrees: AA, AAS, AFA, AGE, or GOT

How much work is required?
Students will participate in shared experiences with the other scholars and with faculty and will plan individual projects for classes noted as “honors classes.” Also, students will participate in a Project Forum and Honors Awards ceremony in the spring of the academic year. |
