MOCKSVILLE

Davie Construction Co. of Clemmons has completed demolition of 3,000 square feet of space inside the community building on the Davie campus of Davidson County Community College.

Crews are framing new walls, installing electrical wiring, plumbing, heating and air conditioning.

The work is part of a project that will add 11,000 square feet of new and renovated space, including a library and Internet cafe in the community building.

The project, which began in January, will cost $2 million. It is scheduled to be completed by mid-October, said Larry Hamilton, the college’s director of construction.

The rainfall in February and this month did not delay construction, he said.

“They are working right ahead,” he said. “As soon as things dry out, they go back to work. You have to expect some rain when you start a project in the winter. They are keeping things on track.”

Employees will transform the renovated first floor of the community building into a new library, the college said in a statement. The library will have computers and wireless Internet connections.

An Internet-access area, where students and patrons will gather to work online, will be added at the rear of the community building. The building’s entrance will become the library’s new entrance.

The addition to the lab building contains 8,500 square feet of new construction. Crews are installing underground utilities and foundations.

The lab building will contain a large multiple-use classroom, with a divider, that can accommodate up to 104 people. The classroom will open onto an outside patio.

The addition to the lab building will become the campus entrance.

Other features of the addition include a new conference room, a bookstore, a student-services area, a kitchen and administrative offices.

The project will increase learning opportunities for students in Davie, said Mary E. Rittling, the president of DCCC.

“Our Davie campus is growing, adding new students and new programs,” she said in the statement. “This addition and renovation will make sure we have the physical space and the technology that our students and community deserve and expect.”

The construction is part of a 10-year campus plan developed in 2004 when enrollment projections for the Davie campus showed a 19 percent increase in students by 2014, officials said. For the fall 2007 semester, 1,633 students were enrolled at the Davie campus.

The campus is on 45 acres off U.S. 601, across the street from Davie High School.
