DCCC Foundation Scholarship Golf Tournament

April 11, 2008

The 17th annual Davidson County Community College Foundation Scholarship Golf Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, at Sapona Country Club.

Approximately 300 golfers and volunteers are expected for the tournament that will include morning and afternoon rounds. Last year, golfers raised $32,000 for the DCCC Foundation’s scholarship program.

Funds raised through the tournament support the annual DCCC Presidential Scholars Program that will award 11 scholarships. The award covers tuition, books and fees for two years. One student from each high school in Davidson and Davie counties and one home school student from each county will be chosen each year.

Eligible students are academic achievers who graduate in 2008 from high schools or home schools in Davidson and Davie counties. They must pursue an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree at DCCC and be involved in their community.

Special golf tournament guests will be Danny Herndon of FOX 8 sports and Jack Murphy of the Murphy in the Morning Show on WKZL radio.

Golfers may register through April 17th for the morning round that begins at 8 a.m. Making the tournament possible are 19 corporate sponsors, 50 hole sponsors and approximately 35 DCCC and community volunteers. Golfers will take home door prizes, silent auction items, gift certificates, and top team awards.

Dr. Mary E. Rittling, president of DCCC, will pose with golfers for team photographs to offer as tournament mementos. Teams will be treated to a lunch sponsored by May Heavy Equipment Sales and Rental.

Three of the golf teams are made up of DCCC students, with team sponsorships by James Rittling, the Timberlake Gallery, and Eaton Funeral Home. Co-chairs of the tournament are DCCC Foundation Board of Directors President Larry Link of Lexington and Foundation Director Bill Jobert of Advance.

The DCCC Foundation Scholarship Golf Tournament was first held in 1991 at Sapona Country Club featuring 51 players. In 2007, a total of 210 golfers participated in the event held at Sapona, marking the largest tournament ever held there.

The Stanford Group Company, SigCom, Inc., and Follett Higher Education Group are three new corporate sponsors this year. Vice president of the Stanford Group Company is Deems May, Jr., a Lexington native and former pro football player. His father, Bert May of Lexington, a DCCC Foundation Board member and owner of May Heavy Equipment Sales and Rental, will donate $100 for every eagle a golfer hits during the tournament as a new “Eagles for Education” fundraiser.

The new sponsors join the following corporate sponsors to make the tournament possible: Amarr Garage Doors, Bank of North Carolina, Cunningham Brick Company, Davie County Economic Development Council, ISS Facility Services, Inc., Johnson Controls, Mountcastle Insurance, NewBridge Bank, Old Dominion Freight Line, Orrell’s Food Service, Swing Transport, Inc., Summer Industries, Inc., Time Warner Cable, Thomasville Medical Center, and Thomasville Furniture Industries.
