Expansion Underway at DCCC’s Davie Campus in Mocksville

March 20, 2008

The demolition of 3,000 square feet of space inside the Community Building on the Davie Campus of Davidson County Community college has been completed, and crews are busy reconfiguring the space by framing new walls, installing electrical wiring, plumbing, heating and air conditioning.

The renovated first floor of the Community Building will soon be transformed into a modern new library for use by DCCC students and the Davie County community. The library will offer computers and wireless Internet connections.

The construction project will add an Internet access area at the rear of the Community Building where students and patrons may gather for on-line work. The present entrance to the building will become new entrance to the library and will cease to be the main campus entrance.

The new Lab Building addition contains 8,500 square feet of new construction. Crews are installing underground utilities and foundations, with the steel structure to be erected by summer.

It will house a large, multiple-use classroom with a flexible room divider that can accommodate up to 104 people. The classroom will open onto an outside patio that students, staff, faculty and guests may enjoy during meals or breaks.

Other features of the addition include a new conference room furnished with wood flooring donated by Unilin Flooring of Thomasville. In addition, there will be a bookstore, one-stop student services area, a kitchen and administrative offices.

The $2 million construction project represents will increase learning opportunities for students in Davie County. “Our Davie Campus is growing, adding new students and new programs. This addition and renovation will make sure we have the physical space and the technology that our students and community deserve and expect,” said Dr. Mary E. Rittling, DCCC President.

The Davie Campus of DCCC fills a growing need for higher education, said Neal Foster, one of two Davie County representatives on the DCCC Board of Trustees. “DCCC is the only higher education institution in Davie County, and it must grow to keep up with the population growth of our county,” he added.

“Lifelong learning is no longer simply a buzz word in the educational community. It is a reality for the citizens of our entire community to remain globally competitive and help ensure continuation of a holistically complete quality of life,” said Lee Rollins, a member of the DCCC Board of Trustees who resides in Mocksville.

“The progress our Davie Campus continues to make will provide lifelong learning opportunities for all segments of our population and allow much greater flexibility for the business community to leverage these wonderful services,” Rollins added.
