Large Turn-Out for Davie Education Center Opening

April 18, 2008

Over 100 people attended a ribbon cutting and open house April 14 at the new Davie Education Center of Davidson County Community College.

The center is located on Highway 158 at 120 Kinderton Boulevard, Suite 110, in the Kinderton professional office park. Adjacent to the Town Hall of Bermuda Run, the facility was purchased by the DCCC Foundation, and it offers continuing education and curriculum courses. In order to provide better higher educational access to people in its service area of Davie and Davidson counties, this is the third satellite center opened by the College since 2004.

Cutting the ribbon on the new DCCC Davie Education Center are (from left) Neal Foster, DCCC Trustee; Terry Bralley, Davie County Manager; Dr. Mary E. Rittling, DCCC President; Larry Link, DCCC Foundation President; Thom Hege, DCCC Trustee Chair; and Lee Rollins, DCCC Trustee.

“Based on population studies, we knew several years ago there would be significant growth in this northeastern area of Davie County,” said Dr. Mary E. Rittling, president of DCCC. “Our college foundation came forward to make the Davie Education Center possible and to allow us to offer programs the community says it wants.”

The Davie Education Center offers a broad selection of courses, workshops, and seminars of interest to business and residents. Community surveys will be conducted to gather input to complement progams in early childhood education and allied healthcare. A videoconferencing classroom allows the facility to connect with other campuses to broadcast and receive educational meetings, classes, and programs.

Larry Link, president of the DCCC Foundation, spoke on behalf of his fellow directors. “The Davidson County Community College Foundation is pleased to make this possible. Thank you to all those who contribute to the foundation to help what I call ‘Mary’s kids…they are young, old and everything in between, and all are in need of better access to education.”

DCCC Board of Trustee Chairman Thom Hege said he, too, was grateful for contributers to the DCCC Foundation. “Thank you to the DCCC Foundation and the people of Davie County for putting their trust in us. We will return this trust ten-fold.”

Davie County Manager Terry Bralley remarked on the center as a tool for economic development. “What a beautiful setting for such a great investment in our community. This is a great tool for economic development. I can’t say enough about the college’s leadership, energy level and commitment to this community in the last five years,” he said.

Lee Rollins and Neal Foster, the DCCC Board of Trustee members who represent Davie County, praised DCCC leaders for serving Davie County in a proactive way. “You just have to look around at the number of leaders in this room to know how important this center is to Davie County. This extension of the community is worth so much. Continuous learning is something we have to be prepared for,” said Rollins.

Foster commented on the College’s vision to expand much-needed services in the growing portion of Davie County. “Education is something we do all of our lives. I thank Mary Rittling and DCCC for their vision for this county,” he said.

Leanne Beauchamp, the newly hired director of the Davie Education Center, was introduced during the ribbon cutting. Also located there is Scott Gantt, program director for Workforce and Continuing Education. In addition, Toby Royston, the DCCC Small Business Center Director, has an office at the center to offer free, confidential services for those who own small businesses or hope to start one. Small businesses are those with 100 or fewer employees.
