Davidson County Community College is implementing a new “Go Green” initiative to help reduce waste, save energy, and promote environmental stewardship among faculty, staff, students, and the community.
Small adjustments in the way we consume and dispose of resources can add up to significant and positive environmental effects. With just minor changes, we can make a very positive impact on the planet. For example, according to The Green Book by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas Kostigen, if everyone in the U.S. used one less paper napkin per day, in a year’s time we would have saved one billion pounds of landfill waste.
The “Go Green” initiative will kick-off on St. Patrick’s Day, Monday, March 17th, with the SGA asking everyone to wear green and do just one thing to help the planet. That might mean something as simple as unplugging the chargers for your cell-phone, iPod, and wireless handhelds when not in use because they still utilize electricity even when not charging.
Additional events planned include guest speaker environmental marine biologist, Ann Somers, the Zoo and Aquarium Science club’s Rain Barrel sale, the ‘Go Green” tip of the Week, a contest for the “Greenest Department” on campus, and a Earth Day Celebration on April 22.
