Justin Wheelock and Cody Furr were selected to represent DCCC for their academic success and leadership abilities. A DCCC committee selected the two Dean’s List students based on their grade point average, hours completed, demonstration of college values, and contributions to DCCC and the greater community.
"We are extremely proud of these two students because of their outstanding academic achievements and campus leadership," said Dr. Mary Rittling, DCCC President. "Our professional faculty and staff are to be commended for helping prepare and guide these fine students who represent DCCC so well.”
Wheelock, 19, is the son of Nancy and Gerald Wheelock of Lexington. He has a 3.8 grade point average and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Nominated by Tony Hartle of the DCCC Business and Computer Coaching Center, Wheelock enrolled at DCCC in 2006 after graduating with high honors from North Davidson High School.
“Justin Wheelock is a computer programming student who works as an invaluable assistant to me,” said Hartle. “He has devoted time to helping the College through his work in the center as well as helping students achieve various degrees of success within their respective computer courses. In addition, he is active in both the computer club and the newly formed Gamers Club here on campus.”
Wheelock is working toward an Associate in Applied Science Science degree in Computer Programming. He plans to transfer to a four-year university to obtain a bachelor’s degree in game programming/design and networking technology. He hopes to earn a master’s degree in computer programming.
Furr, 20, is a resident of Thomasville who has a 3.8 grade point average. The son of Alvin and Kim Furr, he was nominated by his advisor Kenneth Kirk, the DCCC Director of Student Life. Furr is a DCCC Storm basketball player and was an honor student at East Davidson High School where he graduated in 2005.
“Cody Furr is a candidate for the Associate in Science degree and has represented the College so well in the classroom and on the basketball team,” said Kirk.” “He gave a motivational speech to approximately 300 high school seniors this past year and is a role model wherever he goes.”
Furr hopes to transfer to UNC Charlotte where he would like to major in sports medicine.
Wheelock and Furr will be among 116 community college student honorees from across North Carolina. Each year two students from each of the 58 community college are honored during the Academic Excellence Awards luncheon.
The recognition notes the students’ achievements in their academic fields of study, excellence in communicating effectively through speaking, listening and writing and interpersonal skills, and their use of critical thinking skills to analyze and solve problems.
Approximately 600 guests are expected to attend the luncheon, including members of the State Board of Community Colleges, local community college officials, staff of the System Office in Raleigh and members of the N.C. General Assembly.
The State Board of Community Colleges and the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents will sponsor the awards luncheon.
