Davidson County Community College Uptown Lexington Education Center will offer the following Basic Skills and Continuing Education classes beginning May 1, 2008. For additional information, please call 238-0969. Please refer to the CID number when registering for your class.

The following classes are fee waived (FREE) to those that are unemployed, have been notified of an impending layoff, or meet eligibility requirements. To those that do not qualify for free classes, the classes are available for the fees indicated.

Keyboarding - CID # 13160
This beginner’s course teaches the components and functions of the computer keyboard. Emphasis is placed on the keyboard mastery and typing technique. Students need to bring a USB Flash Drive to the first class. This course is fee waived (FREE) to those who are unemployed, have been notified of a layoff, or meet eligibility requirements.

Computer Skills for Today’s Workforce: Beginner - CID # 13110
A beginner course designed to introduce computes and computer terms, develop a moderate level of basic computer-use skills, develop e-mail capabilities, and develop skills in navigating the internet and using search engines. Students need to bring a USB Flash Drive to the second class. Information on what type to purchase will be given at first class. This course is fee waived (FREE) to those who are unemployed, have been notified of a layoff, or meet eligibility requirements.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Designed to instruct adults of all ages who did not complete their education through the public schools. Course work is done in the areas of basic reading, English, math, spelling, and writing. Classes for non-readers are available. Helps prepare adults who want to earn an Adult High School Diploma or GED. Students work at their own rate and receive individual help and guidance as needed. There is no registration fee and books are furnished free. Students may enroll at any time.

General Educational Development (GED)
Designed as a means for adults to obtain a high school diploma credential.
Individuals take the GED exams to demonstrate high school level
competencies in English, social studies, science, reading, and math. Preparation is on an individualized basis. The GED program is sponsored by the American Council on Education; the GED is the legal equivalent of a North Carolina High School Diploma. The only cost is a $7.50 GED testing fee.
