DCCC's International Week Activities Scheduled Nov. 14-18

The annual International Education Week at Davidson County Community College will take place Nov. 14-18, with an array of events scheduled around theme of “The World is Our Classroom.”

The showcase event known as “A Taste of International” will take place on Thursday, Nov. 17 in Brinkley Gym on the Davidson Campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It will feature a celebration and exchange of global cultures, with a colorful array of displays from approximately 30 countries of the world as well as entertainment.

Each display offers international information, exhibits, native costumes and artifacts. Attendees will also have the opportunity to taste samples of international desserts and observe a variety of global musical and dancing entertainment.

The $3 admission for "A Taste of International" will help raise money to fight world hunger through a donation to the W.H.Y. hunger relief effort. It will also support the DCCC International Education Student Travel Fund. This scholarship fund was recently established to assist students who wish to pursue international education study trips such as short-term study abroad trips to China and Peru in May 2012.

As part of the week’s activities, an international film screening will be offered at no charge on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the DCCC Conference Center. The film screening is made possible through a partnership between DCCC and the RiverRun International Film Festival and is co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and the State Department.

The film, “An African Election,” won the 2011 Atlanta Film Festival’s Grand Jury award and details the 2008 elections in Ghana. It is offered as part of RiverRun's "Films with Class" program, and the free screening will be followed by a group discussion.

International Week activities scheduled for Monday, Nov. 14:

• Exhibits outlining international issues will be on display from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Gee Building, Room 005.

Events scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 15:

• A display featuring international Issues will be on view at the DCCC Davie Campus in Mocksville from 12:30 to 3 p.m. in the Administration Building, Room 110.

• DCCC international students will present “A Day in the Life – Indonesia and Egypt” at 2 p.m. in the Mendenhall Building, Room 226.  International students Ismiyati Hasiru and Sarah Abdelrahman will share details about life in their home countries.

• Those wanting more information about international study trips may attend a Study Abroad Information Session to be held on the Davie Campus at 3:15 p.m. in Room 110 of the Administration Building.

Events scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 16:

• Free RiverRun International Film screenings of “An African Election,” 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., upstairs in the DCCC Conference Center, with a discussion to follow each screening.  

• English as a Second Language students will join DCCC’s international students to hone their conversational English skills and learn about other cultures in the process. Join in the discussion during the kickoff of the “English Corner Café,”12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Gee Building basement near the elevator.  The Café will be open every Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. through the fall semester.

Events scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011

• “A Taste of International” takes place on the Davidson Campus Thursday, Nov. 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Brinkley Gym. Admission is $3.

Events scheduled for Friday, Nov.18, 2011

• ESL Table Talk will feature a roundtable discussion featuring DCCC’s English as a Second Language students. This will take place upstairs in the DCCC Conference Center at 12:30 p.m.

In addition, International Week activities will include a Cambodian art exhibition in the DCCC Conference Center and daily international food specials offered in the Storm Cellar.

In 2010, approximately 1,185 students, staff, faculty and campus visitors took part in various campus events to celebrate International Week during which $1,416 was donated and sent to the Adakum Foundation to help eradicate malaria in developing countries.
