A walk-a-thon to raise money and awareness for world hunger will take place at Davidson County Community College on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Registration for walkers will take place on the Davidson Campus at a table in front of the Brooks Student Center beginning at 7 a.m. Walkers will follow a one-mile course along the blue and white footprints painted around the outside perimeter of campus buildings.
Participants may walk as many miles as desired to raise funds to fight hunger. DCCC International Club members will be stationed at the registration table to help walkers sign up and to accept donations. Paper plates with facts about hunger and poverty will be placed along the walking route.
The 30 members of the International Club raised more than $1,000 in sponsorships prior to the walk. Proceeds will benefit World Hunger Year, or W.H.Y., for short, an organization founded by the late musician and hunger activist, Harry Chapin. The mission of W.H.Y. is to encourage communities to band together to help feed starving people in the United States and around the world.
“Whether by walking a mile or two, donating money to sponsor a walker or volunteering, the DCCC International Club and the entire DCCC community accepted the challenge to help feed hungry people around the world,” said Susan Scarboro, a DCCC English instructor who is one of the club’s faculty advisors.
“I would like to thank in advance the DCCC community for their generous support of the club’s important project,” said Scarboro.
James Penley, president of DCCC’s International Club, said he hoped the walk-a-thon would educate the community on how many people go hungry in modern times.
“It might surprise us to know, but according to ‘World Hunger Facts,’ one in seven people haven’t enough to eat,” he said.
Additional money to fight world hunger will be raised by the International Club at a sock-hop dance on Friday, Nov. 11, in Brinkley Gym on the Davidson Campus. Admission will be $4 at the door.
