Davidson County Community College and Surry Community College are among nine colleges in the state that will share $18.8 million in new federal workforce training funds, according to an announcement from Sen. Kay Hagan.

The grant is part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative, which helps develop college programs tailored to local industry needs. Each of the colleges receiving funding under the grant has at least one local employer partner with jobs available and the need for trained workers to fill them.

North Carolina received the third-highest amount of total funding through the Trade Adjustment Assistance program in 2010 of any state in the country, the announcement said.
