Lions and kudus and zebras! Oh my!

These native African animals, as well as fish, birds and amphibians, can all be seen in Davidson County Community College's fall art exhibit, "Out of the Wild," which features nine artists presenting a variety of wildlife artwork in diverse media areas including collages, photography, mixed media and paintings in oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels.

The show also includes an exotic animal collection donated to the DCCC Foundation by Peggy Hinkle of Lexington. The stuffed trophies on display include a plains zebra, male lion and leopard, as well as a bushbuck, kudu and duikers, all members of the antelope species. After this exhibit ends, the collection will also be on loan to Montgomery County Community College, which has a taxidermy program.

The fall exhibit is on display on both floors of DCCC's B.E. Mendenhall Jr. Building through Dec. 12 and is open to the public during regular college operating hours.

Barbara Cullen, curator of the exhibit for DCCC, said the donation of the African animal collection was the inspiration for an exhibit with a wildlife theme. She said she was pleased with the wide variety of media represented.

One of the artists in the exhibit, Ralph Henzler of Winston-Salem, has a number of black-and-white photographs in the show that continue the "out of Africa" theme. They are on display in the second-floor boardroom of Mendenhall.
