Kasey Newark, a Davidson County Community College art student from Mocksville, won the first place prize in DCCC’s Student Summer Art Exhibit for her acrylic painting titled “Staircase,” and Andrew McCarn, an art student from Lexington, won second place for his “Pear Study” watercolor painting.

After completing six semesters of art instruction at DCCC, Newark plans to transfer to Appalachian State University in hopes of becoming an elementary school art teacher. She and McCarn are among 23 students whose paintings were selected to hang in the DCCC Student Summer Art Exhibit consisting of over 120 works. Winning third place in the exhibit was Sheree Lanier for her acrylic self-portrait titled “Hello.”

Approximately 180 people attended the opening reception held June 1 in the Mendenhall Building on the Davidson Campus. The exhibit features over 120 works of art that will hang on both floors of the Mendenhall Building through August 2. The exhibit and the reception were sponsored by the DCCC Foundation. Edyce Elworth, coordinator of the DCCC Foundation and alumni activities, and Carl Shatley, DCCC art instructor, awarded cash prizes and certificates to the winners.
