Guilford Technical Community College and Davidson County Community College along with three other community colleges in the state will share a $495,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, according to an announcement.

The "Completion by Design" grant will allow those schools to devise and share new approaches to help more young people obtain a degree, certificate or credential, the announcement said. GTCC will be the managing partner of the participating schools in North Carolina.

Starting in June, the schools will spend one year examining their own student data to identify points in the educational process that result in students leaving school before completion and designing strategies to address those "loss points." Phase two will involve implementing the strategies, and phase three will focus on policy implications and scaling up successful strategies.

Besides GTCC and DCCC, the other North Carolina schools involved are Central Piedmont Community College, Martin Community College and Wake Technical Community College. The Gates Foundation also made similar grants in three other states.
