The Davidson County Community College Student Summer Art Exhibit consisting of over 120 works will open with a reception on Wednesday, June 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Mendenhall Building on the Davidson Campus.
Featured are the works of 23 DCCC art students, graduates and alumni. Chosen for the juried exhibit are a variety of drawings as well as paintings rendered in oil, acrylic and watercolor. The exhibit will hang on both floors of the Mendenhall Building through August 2, and it is supported by the DCCC Foundation.
“This is our most ambitious show to date with several large-scale pieces and many self- portraits by the students,” said Carl Shatley, DCCC’s curriculum art instructor.
Artists include Melissa Asher, a 2011 DCCC graduate who will transfer to Greensboro College to become an art educator; Jessica Stalvey, a DCCC Dean’s List student with a special interest in animation who transferred to UNCG to major in art; Roy Wilson, a DCCC art student and Iraqi War veteran; and Aaron Adkins, a DCCC student studying advertising and graphic design.
The piece of art chosen to appear on a printed DCCC postcard to publicize the exhibit is titled "Staircase," by Kasey Newark of Davie County. After completing six semesters of art instruction, she plans to transfer to Appalachian State University where she hopes to become an elementary school art teacher.
Other DCCC art students or alumni whose work will be featured in the exhibit are Jessica Davis, Deborah Davis, Barbara Hustler, Andrew McCarn, Dex Riley, Charlene Walker, Sheree Lanier, Mackenzie Richey, Star Stultz, David Beck, Sharon Welch, Cindy Christian, Allen Christian, Brandi Hunt, Carl Weaver, Missy Hedrick, Nicole Nixon, and David Beck.
