Eighth graders from Lexington, Thomasville, Davidson and Davie counties will visit Davidson County Community College March 17, 18, and 21 in the annual College and Career Fair as part of a collaborative effort to encourage middle school students to begin thinking about their higher education choices.
About 2,200 eighth graders from Davidson County Schools, Davie County Schools, Lexington City Schools, and Thomasville City Schools will visit the Davidson Campus.
Approximately eight to 10 groups of eighth graders will attend a presentation in the DCCC Conference Center before attending a college/career fair in Brinkley Gymnasium, spending about an hour on campus. The event is coordinated by Jenny Nance, DCCC’s recruiter and enrollment counselor.
“Our goal is to spark their interest and thinking about their futures and to share essential information on goals they must focus on to be prepared for college,” said Nance. “They will spend time learning about interesting academic and career programs and interacting with faculty and staff to ask questions about college options and opportunities.”
Many college and career presentations will allow middle schoolers to interact with DCCC staff and faculty. For instance, in a business and computer presentation, students will participate in a consumer taste test on the difference between Coke and Pepsi. In addition, students will observe a criminal justice demonstration by a professional crime scene investigator and an IV tube insertion and CPR demonstration by emergency medical science instructors.
A biology display will feature inflatable pig’s lungs and a sheep’s brain, and a volcano will erupt during a chemistry demonstration. DCCC transportation technologies will display a customized DCCC car, truck, and motorcycle as well as a cutaway race car from Richard Childress Racing. Other exhibits will include those on fire protection, teacher education, computer security, visual arts, and zoo and aquarium science.
