Koon, 22, is pursuing an associate's degree in arts at Davidson County Community College with plans to graduate this spring. She is the president of the club S.A.F.E., which stands for Student Activists for Empowerment. Koon started the club last summer after taking a women's study class and developing an interest in poverty, teen birth rates and feminism.
The club is based on the premises of being a feminist, or a person who advocates for the political, economic, social and equality of everyone, Koon said. She went to the college's student services office and had to develop a constitution on how the club will contribute to the school and society.
“I wanted to help the community so that we were all equally, socially, politically and economically the same,” she said. “As a community we should help people who want to help others. I love helping people.”
