To kick off Women's History Month, an international activist visited Davidson County Community College on Thursday to share with her personal journey of fighting for women's rights.

Asra Nomani, a guest speaker in the DCCC Conference Center, spoke to a crowd of more than 50 students.

“This was a fantastic way to kick off Women's History Month,” said Lynne Watts, director of student life and leadership at Davidson County Community College. “She's such a fantastic woman who in a short period of time has encouraged me to look within myself to see how I can help to make a difference in this world.”

Nomani, who is a Muslim, was born in India and immigrated to America with her family at a young age. She touched on her family background, religion and life as a Muslim. Her goal is for the students to realize everything they have been hearing of the Islam religion may not be true. She said she wants students to understand how women of that culture have evolved over the years.
