Big canvases, bold splashes of color and a sense of movement are all trademarks of Sherri Peterson's artwork that features Cajun culture and Mardi Gras scenes.

Peterson, of Lexington, is one of eight artists included in Davidson County Community College's spring art exhibit called "New Expressions." The diverse artwork, which includes photography, clay, bookmaking and paintings in oils, acrylics, pastels and watercolors, will be displayed on both floors of the B.E. Mendenhall Jr. Building on the Davidson Campus during regular school hours until mid-May.

At the opening reception Tuesday afternoon, Peterson, who is an adoptee, said she began researching her heritage and, through a friend who is from Cajun country in Louisiana, discovered a culture of people who come from diverse backgrounds who love music, dance, food and life in general.
