A new organization at Davidson County Community College is starting a tradition this year by creating a day of speakers, music and educational activities for youths all in remembrance of a famous civil rights leader.

The inaugural Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in Brinkley Gymnasium. The event is sponsored by the Black Culture organization in conjunction with the Office of Student Life. The college is closed for the national observance day.

"The purpose is to gather on the actual observance day to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King. We are very excited," said Dawn Tafari, DCCC faculty member with developmental studies and co-advisor of the club.
